What Changed After My Health Scare (And Why I'd Change It Again)

There is a version of yoga culture that treats suffering as proof of work. The harder the better. The sweatier, the more legitimate. If you are not destroyed by the end, did it even count?


I used to live inside that version. And then my body had something to say about it.


After my health scare, I stopped feeding my ego what I can only describe as Swiss rolls of suffering. The practice became floatier, more fluid. The intensity stayed, but the intention behind it completely changed. There is a meaningful difference between being physically destroyed and actually being challenged, and it took me longer than I would like to admit to learn it.


Intentional Intensity Is Still Intensity


Let me be clear: this is not a story about switching to gentle stretches and calling it a day.

The practice is still demanding. It just demands different things now. The mind works as hard as the body. Focus, breath awareness, the quality of attention you bring to each pose, these are not soft requirements. They are where the real work lives.


More reps do not mean more growth. Harder does not mean better. What changed is that I stopped confusing volume with depth.


Rest Is Not the Opposite of Practice


I built my routine around rest, and I mean that seriously. Sometimes rest looks like a restorative pose held for ten minutes. Sometimes it looks like staring at the ceiling fan. Sometimes it is a cat purring in my lap and absolutely nothing else happening.


This is not laziness. This is energy management.


I limit conversations, coffees, and honestly, people. Not out of coldness, but out of a quiet understanding that attention is a resource. Every unnecessary drain on that resource is energy I am not bringing to my students or my practice. The goal is to show up full, not to show up performing fullness while running on empty.


For anyone who teaches, or does any kind of creative or emotionally engaged work, this is worth sitting with. You cannot pour from a depleted place. Protecting your energy is not selfish. It is professional.


Routine Is Not the Enemy of Growth


There is a persistent idea that novelty is where growth lives. That you need to keep chasing new experiences, new challenges, new input to stay alive to what you are doing.

I disagree entirely.


Routine, for me, is where inquiry happens. When you return to the same practice again and again, you start to notice things you missed the first twenty times. The pose has not changed, but you have. And if you are genuinely curious, the same thing is never quite the same thing.


Boredom is a signal that you have stopped asking questions. It has nothing to do with the material.


What Yoga Is Actually For


We go full geek on this mat. Anatomy breakdowns, the occasional poem, a random fact about your psoas muscle. Whatever the class needs on that particular day.


This is not a flexibility competition. It is not a calorie counter. The goal is not to make you look a certain way or perform a certain shape.


The goal is to make you feel happy. Not the kind of happy that evaporates by Sunday evening, but the kind that is still there when Monday hits. The kind of strong that lives in your breath, in your posture, in the quiet certainty that you are capable of more than you thought.


That is alignment. Body first. Mind follows.


On Algorithms and Authenticity


I have given up on the algorithm. Fully, peacefully, with my whole chest.


I do not send paragraph-long messages to enquiries explaining why my class will change their life. I do not choreograph slow-motion mat rolls to prove I am worth following. If three people show up to a workshop, those are my three people, and we are going to have the best time while everyone else is somewhere being lukewarm.


The job is to do the work, trust the work, and not dilute it trying to be legible to people who were never going to get it anyway.

The Shift Worth Making


If there is one thing a health scare gives you, it is clarity about what is actually worth your energy. For me, that clarity landed here: the practice is not a performance. Not for an audience, not for an algorithm, not even for your own ego.


It is a conversation between you and your body, conducted with honesty and curiosity, over a very long period of time.


That conversation does not need to be loud to be real. It does not need witnesses. It just needs to keep going.


Show up. Inquire. Rest. Repeat.


That is the whole thing.
